How I Started My Journey with Spearmint Games
Every journey begins with a single step—and mine began with a passion for mobile games and a strong desire to build something meaningful in the world of game development. I still remember the day I joined Spearmint Games (now Funvent Studios) back in June 2018. Fresh out of college with a B.Tech in Computer Science and a head full of dreams, I entered the studio as a junior game developer, both excited and nervous.
Before I joined Spearmint Games, I just had a few months of internship experience with Techgentsia Software Technologies Pvt. Ltd, where I worked on developing basic study games for school students. It was a government project, and I was responsible for game development using the Unity platform. This brief experience helped me get noticed by the Spearmint team, and after a few interview rounds, I was selected. I still remember my joining date clearly—June 25, 2018.
Spearmint Games was a small but ambitious team, and I was eager to learn everything I could. My first few days were all about getting familiar with the team, tools, and the fast-paced workflow of the mobile gaming industry. When I stepped into the Spearmint Games floor, everything was new to me. Initially, they gave me a brief explanation of the ongoing projects. At that time, two games had already been developed—Word Chest and Lines Hexa. My first task was to redevelop these games in Cocos2d-JS (JavaScript) for the Facebook web game platform.
Through this experience, I gained valuable insights into the complete game development cycle and how the Cocos2d-x engine works. I also learned many foundational concepts and practical development skills. Once those games were completed and launched on Facebook, I began working on more Cocos2d-x games. Then, I started developing my first game, Block Puzzle Jewel, from scratch. The learning curve was steep, but the environment was incredibly supportive. My seniors guided me, shared their experience, and encouraged me to get hands-on as much as possible.
One of the things that stood out early on was how much freedom and trust the team gave me. Still, the freedom they give me in the company is really awesome. I am proud to maintain the trust they’ve placed in me for every game I work on—meeting deadlines on time and ensuring quality delivery. I wasn't just writing small chunks of code—I was actively involved in shaping features, solving bugs, and even pitching ideas for new gameplay mechanics. It didn’t take long before I started contributing significantly to live projects.
From being a junior developer to eventually becoming the chief programmer, my growth at Spearmint was organic and deeply fulfilling. I could be part of the tremendous growth of Spearmint Games and I got the opportunity to work on games that went on to earn millions of downloads, and I developed expertise in both Unity and Cocos2d-x (now Axmol). Each challenge, deadline, and late-night debugging session helped shape the developer I am today.
Looking back, joining Spearmint Games was a turning point in my career. It taught me not just about game development, but also about working in a team, delivering under pressure, and continually pushing my creative limits. This journey has been more than just a job—it's been a foundation for everything I’ve built since.
